Vilma Colom
When Vilma Colom was elected as alderman for the 35th Ward
of Chicago in 1995, she was doing more than making history as the city’s
fist Hispanic female ever elected to the position. She was also beginning
a process that has helped to revitalize the Logan Square neighborhood on
Chicago’s
northwest side where she served for two successful terms. Prior to 1995,
Colom had been a political activist for many years. As a former educator who
worked at the University of Chicago of Illinois at Chicago, she endeavored
to help keep minority students in school and on the path to a successful life.
The voters responded to Vilma’s efforts in 1996 by electing her Democratic ward committeeman. In 1999, Vilma won a second term as alderman. Colom was then named vice chairman of the city’s Landmark Committee and was also named to a seat on the Chicago City Council’s Budget Committee.
Today, Vilma remains active in her community as private citizen and as a class member (1988) of Leadership America.
